Writing Fiction Versus Non-Fiction

Fiction and Non-fiction writing are often compared even though they are two very different art forms. Each genre has its own set of pros and cons, and people can’t help but debate which writing style is easier or more practical for a writer to call his or her own. Let us examine the difference between these two styles then and find out how they truly differ and what similarities hold true to both.

How Does One Write Fiction?

Fiction writing reaches out to an audience seeking entertainment or food for their imaginations. They want to be transported to different places and periods or explore lives different from their own. Thus, it is only proper for any fiction writer to have a big imagination and to be very creative.

To write a good story, fiction writers must be able to come up with interesting plots and strong characters. A good handle on the pen will also give fiction writers an edge and a great writing style. These elements must be well developed and a writer must make sure to concentrate on answering the whys behind the events conspiring in the story.

Most readers of fiction want to escape their realities as well as challenge their brains. Therefore, mystery, conflict, and a lot of suspense are integral in writing good fiction. These things keep a reader enticed and glued to events happening within the plot.

What most writers love about creating fiction is that it does not have strict boundaries. They have much more freedom and control on what they actually want to include in their work, without concern about what is factual or not. In fiction writing, research often does not have to be as extensive. All that is required of fiction writers is to let their imaginations run wild.

How Does One Write Non-Fiction?

Non-fiction writing requires a lot of preparation. For the imaginative type, it may not be as easy as fiction writing. After all, non-fiction writers thrive on what is real instead of finding entertainment through the imagination.

Writers of non-fiction must concentrate more on what can be seen and touched. Actual experience plays a major role in the story. Readers would understandably look for vivid descriptions about events and historical references to remain interested.

And so, unlike writing fiction that only requires one to have a good imagination, this genre requires research. Guessing to fill in the spaces within the story’s events is rarely tolerated. In fact, many controversies have already sprung out of this issue. Therefore, one must include the exact historical information in his or her work.

Which Style Is Better To Adopt?

Most writers who take on writing as a career claim that sticking with one form of writing may not be enough to earn a living. More often than not, if you want to become known and successful as a writer, versatility on these two writing styles is essential as many different demands may come your way. After all, even Stephen King has non-fiction books to his credit.

These two writing styles may certainly be very different, and they have their own advantages and disadvantages to the writer, but being versatile in both styles can certainly do a lot for any writer.

Neither style is superior to the other. Both genres have proven through the test of time how each has captured the intelligence and interest of many. Thus, as a writer you can never go wrong with whichever style you choose.
