7 Tips for Great Fiction Book Writing

Do you remember how you felt the last time you read a great work of fiction? Do you know how authors weave those great stories? Are you aware of what an author goes through to bring you a plot that keeps you reading from cover to cover? If you want to write a novel your readers can’t put down, here are some great tips that you can apply to your fiction writing today.

1. In all cases of fiction writing, it is important to write original plots. Your storyline should not be lifted from another book. It is important to be unpredictable in every part of your novel.

2. Begin with a rough story outline. Even if it’s only in your head, it’s always a good idea to have some sort of chronology laid out. You may begin by writing down one sentence describing the opening scene. Next write another sentence that describes the very last scene of your book. A big space in between would serve as the space where you write down the major plot points of your story from beginning to end. These sentences will serve as guides as you write the whole novel.

3. Have the story’s characters in mind before you start writing. You must know your characters by heart, as if you personally know them. You must know their strengths and weaknesses.

4. Every good book has conflict. By using your character’s weaknesses and going after them through the plot, you can build a riveting story. There should be a point when the characters are engaged in some sort of emotional struggle. This is as true for action/adventure novels as it is for romance writing.

5. Great fiction writers have to be great storytellers. If you already have the talent for storytelling, start with a storyline that comes from your own experience. The other ideas will have to come from research. Pay attention to important facts when doing your research. You could always use these for your plot and sub-plots.

6. Use the active voice when telling the story. Your goal is for readers to relate to the characters. Use active verbs and concrete nouns to make a stronger impact on the reader. Be on the lookout for adverbs. Can you replace an adverb with a stronger verb?

7. Avoid excessive narration. When you find yourself telling the story, ask yourself how your characters can show what happened instead. Your goal is to set a scene that paints mental pictures for your readers.

These are just a few important tips to take into consideration when writing fiction.  As you get better at the craft, it will become easier for you to think up new plots and characters.
